Research focuses

  • Andean peatland ecology
  • Plant–plant interactions in high mountain ecosystem
  • Long-term vegetation monitoring in mountain ecosystem
  • Conservation of mountain habitats

I am highly interested in the ecology of mountain habitats. My current work focuses on climate change effects on plant-plant interactions in high Andean peatlands how this influences ecosystem functions such as carbon (C) sequestration.

During my PhD I studied the costs of facilitation for the cushion plant Laretia acaulis (Apiaceae) in the High Andes of Central Chile. To understand the effect of beneficiary biomass and cover on reproduction, vegetative growth and accumulation of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) in this cushion species, I evaluated if the reciprocal interaction between cushion and beneficiaries changes along time and an elevational gradient. I found that this interaction is neutral (+/0), i.e, there are no costs for the cushions. Moreover, the interaction is stable along both time and the elevational gradient.

I am also interested in long-term vegetation monitoring to predict the consequences of climate change on Andean vegetation. I participated in several campaigns of plant evaluation in different mountain regions of the Central Andes in the framework of the GLORIA Global observation project.

Other projects focused on the impact of grazing on Andean peatlands, and on contributing to plant identification guides for the Bolivian Andes. I am also interested in the conservation of mountain habitats, having directed and collaborated on projects regarding endangered Puya raimondii and native Polylepis forests together with local communities.
